Same illustrative Moon as the home chart: 44°11′ from 0° Aries in the sidereal zodiac. The table shows how that position becomes Taurus at 14°11′. Nakshatra is a finer layer inside the same 30°, not a second Moon sign.

What Taurus Rashi traditionally represents
Moon in Taurus
In Jyotish, Taurus Moon is traditionally associated with steadiness, comfort, consistency, and a preference for emotional security. The mind settles through familiar places, the senses, and what can be kept.
Illustrative example only. Your result is calculated from your own birth date, time, and place.
The Moon’s zodiac sign
What Is Rashi in Vedic Astrology?
In Vedic astrology, Janma Rashi (Chandra Rashi) is the sidereal zodiac sign occupied by the Moon at birth.
It is different from the Sun sign and the Ascendant (Lagna). This calculator uses Lahiri Ayanamsa to identify your Moon sign from your birth details. The word rashi can mean any of the twelve signs; on this page it is limited to the birth Moon.
Traditional Jyotish reads Janma Rashi as a layer of mind, habit, and emotional need. It is not a scientific personality test, and it is not the same as a full Kundli. The Moon still has a Nakshatra, a house, and a role in Dasha timing.
If you came here from a name-letter chart or a Western Moon-sign calculator, use this tool as a separate check: sidereal Moon at the recorded birth moment, not a first initial and not the tropical zodiac.
From local time to Moon sign
How Is Your Rashi Calculated?
The calculator settles your birth moment, finds the Moon, applies Lahiri Ayanamsa, then divides that sidereal longitude into twelve signs of 30°. Aries begins at 0°, Taurus at 30°, and Pisces at 330°.
Birthplace sets the historical time zone, including older daylight-saving rules, so the local time becomes the correct moment of birth. The Moon is then read in the sidereal zodiac with Lahiri Ayanamsa, the same setting as the other calculators on this site.
Degree inside the sign is what remains after each full 30°. The sample above starts at 44°11′: one full sign of 30° has already passed, so the Moon is in Taurus at 14°11′. At 29°59′ it is still in the current sign; at 30°00′ the name is already the next one. A few minutes of clock error only matter near that edge.
- 1Settle the birth moment
Combine date, local time, and birthplace. Historical time zones and daylight-saving folds or gaps are applied for that place, not today’s offset.
- 2Read the sidereal Moon
Swiss Ephemeris locates the Moon. Lahiri Ayanamsa places it in the sidereal zodiac used for the other calculators on this site.
- 3Name the 30° sign
Divide that position into twelve signs of 30°. Name the matching Rashi, the degree inside it, the traditional lord, and the Nakshatra that sits in the same 30°.
Three lunar questions
Rashi vs Nakshatra vs Lagna
People often use these words as if they were the same. Rashi is the Moon’s 30° sign, Nakshatra is the finer birth star, and Lagna is the rising sign that structures the whole chart.
Seven-graha lords
12 Vedic Rashis and Their Ruling Planets
These are the traditional sign lords. Other schools attach Rahu or Ketu to Scorpio, Aquarius, or similar signs; that debate is not mixed into this basic table.
Date of birth is not always enough
Can You Find Rashi Without Birth Time?
Sometimes the Moon stays in one sign for the whole local calendar day. Sometimes it crosses a 30° boundary. Using noon as a stand-in invents a time and can name the wrong Rashi on a crossing day.
This calculator therefore still asks for an exact birth time. It will not name a Moon sign from the date alone. If your recorded time is uncertain and the Moon may be near a sign edge, treat the result as provisional.
Place still matters even when you care only about the Moon sign: it selects the correct historical time zone. Moon house also depends on the Ascendant, so this page treats house as extra detail, not the main answer.
Common questions
Rashi Calculator FAQ
What is my Rashi?
On this page, Rashi means Janma Rashi: the sidereal zodiac sign the Moon occupied at your birth. Enter your birth date, exact time, and birthplace above to see the English and Sanskrit names, Moon degree, and Rashi lord. In a wider Jyotish context, rashi can also mean any of the twelve signs.
How can I find my Rashi by date of birth?
A date of birth is the starting point, not the whole calculation. The Moon spends about two and a half days in each sign, so people born on the same date can still have different Rashis if the Moon changed signs that day. This calculator uses your local date, time, and place, adjusts for that place’s historical time zone, then reads the Moon’s Lahiri sidereal position.
Is Rashi the same as Moon Sign?
Janma Rashi is the Vedic Moon sign: the sidereal sign of the Moon at birth, also called Chandra Rashi. It is not the Sun sign, and it is not the tropical Moon sign used in most Western horoscopes. When people say “my Rashi” they usually mean this lunar sign.
What is the difference between Rashi and Nakshatra?
Rashi is one of 12 signs of 30°. Nakshatra is one of 27 lunar mansions of 13°20′. Both are read from the same Moon. This calculator answers with Janma Rashi. For the birth star, Pada, deity, and naming sound, use the Nakshatra calculator.
Do I need my birth time to calculate Rashi?
Yes for a single, reliable answer. Birth time matters most when the Moon is near 0° or 30° of a sign, where a small timing error can change the Rashi. Birthplace matters because it sets the historical time zone and any daylight-saving rule on that date. This calculator does not guess a Rashi from the date alone.
Can I calculate Rashi from my name?
Name Rashi and Janma Rashi are different methods. Some traditions assign a sign from the first letter or sound of a name. This calculator does not do that. It uses the Moon’s sidereal position at birth. A name-based result can disagree with the birth Moon and should not be treated as the same thing.
Is my Vedic Moon Sign different from my Western Moon Sign?
It can be. Vedic charts here use the sidereal zodiac with Lahiri Ayanamsa. Most Western Moon-sign tools use the tropical zodiac. The two frames drift apart by roughly 24°, so the Moon can sit in different signs. If a Western calculator already named your Moon sign, do not assume this page will repeat it.
Is this Rashi Calculator free?
Yes. There is no signup and no charge. You enter birth date, time, and place; the Moon sign is read from the same Lahiri sidereal chart used by the other tools on this site. Birth details are not saved.
