Sample Lagna Calculation: From Ascendant Degree to Lagna Lord
If you already calculated, your result is above. The Ascendant below is a fixed teaching example, not a personal chart.
Suppose the calculated Lahiri sidereal Ascendant is 8°15′ Aries. The table shows how that longitude becomes Mesha Lagna, names Mars as Lagna lord, and places the rising degree in Ashwini Pada 3. Illustrative positions only. Not a verified birth-time chart.

What Aries Lagna traditionally represents
Mesha Lagna, ruled by Mars
In traditional Jyotish, Aries Lagna is associated with initiative, direct action, and independence. Its ruler Mars and the rest of the birth chart provide important additional context.
This illustrative Aries-Lagna chart places its ruler Mars in Leo in the fifth whole-sign house.

The rising sign
What Is Lagna in Vedic Astrology?
Lagna, also called the Vedic Ascendant or Janma Lagna, is the sidereal zodiac degree rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment and place of birth. In a whole-sign Vedic birth chart, the sign containing the Lagna becomes the first house. Its ruling planet is called the Lagna Lord.
It is not the Moon sign (Janma Rashi) and not the Sun sign. This calculator uses Lahiri Ayanamsa to name the rising sign from your birth details, then shows the degree, the Lagna lord, and the Nakshatra that holds the Ascendant.
Traditional Jyotish reads Lagna as the chart’s front door: how life is approached and how the twelve houses are counted. It is not a scientific personality test, and it is not a substitute for the full Kundli. The Lagna lord still has a sign, a house, and a role in the rest of the chart.
From local time to rising degree
How Is Lagna Calculated?
The calculator settles your birth moment, finds the eastern horizon at that place, applies Lahiri Ayanamsa, then names the 30° sign that contains the sidereal Ascendant. It does not estimate Lagna from the clock hour alone.
Birthplace sets where you were and which time zone applied that day, including older daylight-saving rules. The Ascendant is where the ecliptic meets the eastern horizon at that moment. Once that rising degree is known, each sign is a 30° span from 0° Aries, and the degree inside the sign is what remains after those full 30° steps.
Which signEvery 30° from 0° Aries is one sign
Degree in that signWhat remains after each full 30°
This only reads the name and in-sign degree from a rising point that has already been calculated. At 29°59′ the Lagna is still the current sign; at 30°00′ the name is already the next one. After the D1 Lagna is clear, some readers open the Navamsa (D9) Chart Calculator because the D9 Ascendant moves even faster and needs the same careful birth time.
- 1Birth date and time
Use the recorded local date and clock time. Do not substitute noon or sunrise for a missing time.
- 2The time zone in force that day
Convert the local clock to the moment that actually applied at the birthplace, including days when clocks sprang forward or fell back.
- 3Birthplace horizon
Latitude and longitude set the local eastern horizon against which the ecliptic is measured.
- 4Lahiri sidereal Ascendant
Swiss Ephemeris finds the rising degree. Lahiri Ayanamsa places it in the sidereal zodiac used on this site.
- 5Sign, degree, and lord
Name the 30° Lagna, the degree inside it, the traditional lord, and the Nakshatra of the rising point—not the Moon.

How Sensitive Is Lagna to Birth Time?
Lagna is one of the most time-sensitive facts in a Vedic chart. A sign is not guaranteed two hours on the eastern horizon; duration stretches or shrinks with latitude and season. Near a sign boundary, a 5, 15, or 30 minute uncertainty in the recorded time can name a different Lagna.
After you calculate, the result includes a ±5, ±15, or ±30 minute check. It recalculates the rising sign a little earlier and later, instead of guessing from the degree alone. If the sign stays put, a small clock error is unlikely to matter. If it changes, treat both possible Lagnas as candidates.
Far-north or far-south birthplaces, days when clocks change, and times near midnight still need an exact recorded time. If that local time did not exist, or happened twice, the form will ask you to correct it rather than guess.
Three different signs
Lagna vs Rashi vs Sun Sign
People often use rising sign, Moon sign, and Sun sign as if they were interchangeable. Lagna is the eastern horizon, Janma Rashi is the Moon, and the Sun sign is the Sun—three longitudes, three jobs in the chart.
Is Vedic Lagna the same as Western Rising Sign?
Both start from the eastern horizon at birth. Vedic Lagna on this site is a Lahiri sidereal degree. Common Western rising-sign calculators use the tropical zodiac. The named sign, or the degree inside it, can therefore differ for the same birth data. This page is not a tropical rising sign calculator.
Seven-graha lords
The 12 Lagna Signs and Their Lords
These are the traditional Jyotish sign lords used to name the Lagna lord. Other schools attach Rahu or Ketu to some signs; that debate is not mixed into this basic table.
Common questions
Lagna Calculator FAQ
What is my Lagna?
Lagna is your Vedic Ascendant: the sidereal sign and degree rising on the eastern horizon at your exact birth moment and place. Enter your birth date, time, and birthplace above to see the English and Sanskrit names, the degree inside the sign, the Lagna lord, and the Ascendant Nakshatra. In a whole-sign chart that sign becomes the first house.
How can I calculate my Lagna by date of birth?
A date of birth is only the starting point. Lagna depends on local time and place as well, because the rising degree moves through the zodiac during the day. This calculator uses your date, exact time, and birthplace, applies the time zone that was in force there on that date, then reads the Lahiri sidereal Ascendant. Date alone is not enough for a single Lagna.
Is Lagna the same as Ascendant or Rising Sign?
The idea is the same: the sign rising in the east at birth. On this page Lagna, Vedic Ascendant, and Janma Lagna all mean that sidereal rising degree. A Western rising-sign calculator often uses the tropical zodiac, so the named sign or degree can differ even when the birth data match.
Can I find my Lagna without birth time?
Not reliably. The rising sign can change during a calendar day, and near a sign boundary a few minutes can change the name. This calculator will not invent a Lagna from the date alone, and it will not substitute noon or sunrise as if it were the recorded time. If the time is uncertain, treat any one-sign answer as provisional.
How often does Lagna change?
A sign spends on average about two hours on the eastern horizon, but the actual window depends on latitude and season. It is not a fixed two-hour clock. After you calculate, use the ±5, ±15, or ±30 minute check to see whether this birth time sits near a sign change. Near 0° or 30°, a few minutes can move the Lagna into the previous or next sign.
What is a Lagna Lord?
The Lagna lord, or Ascendant lord, is the traditional ruling planet of the first-house sign. For Aries that planet is Mars; for Taurus it is Venus, and so on through the seven-graha scheme. This page also shows where that planet sits in the D1 chart—its sign and whole-sign house—because the lord’s placement adds context the sign name alone does not.
Why is my Vedic Ascendant different from my Western Rising Sign?
Both start from the eastern horizon at birth. Vedic calculation here uses the sidereal zodiac with Lahiri Ayanamsa. Most Western rising-sign tools use the tropical zodiac. Those frames currently differ by roughly 24°, so the named sign or the degree inside the sign can change. If a tropical calculator already named your rising sign, do not assume this page will repeat it.
Is this Lagna Calculator free?
Yes. There is no signup and no charge. You enter birth date, time, and place; the Ascendant is read from the same Lahiri sidereal chart used by the other tools on this site. Birth details are not saved.
